Mosquito nets in Morocco: what you need to know

What is actually available in Morocco, what it costs per square metre, and how to choose between a window net, a door net, a roll-up and a sliding one.

A mosquito net is a fine mesh stretched over a frame that lets air through and keeps insects out. In Morocco, expect 550 to 750 MAD per square metre for a made-to-measure aluminium net, depending on the mesh, fitting included.

What a mosquito net is

A mosquito net is a fine mesh stretched over a frame. Air passes through, insects do not. It uses no chemicals and no electricity, and it makes no noise. Its job is to block mosquitoes rather than repel them.

That distinction matters. A spray, a coil or a plug-in acts on the insect and needs replacing. A net acts on the opening and never needs recharging. In a child’s room it is also the only one of the two approaches that puts nothing into the air of the room.

In Morocco it is usually called موستيكير, the French word carried into Darija and pronounced “moustikir”. You will also hear chabaka (شبكة), which means “net”.

The three families sold in Morocco

Three families are sold in Morocco, at very different levels of quality.

The curtain net is a loose mesh hung across the opening, sometimes as two magnetic panels that snap shut behind you. It is the cheapest, it goes up in ten minutes, and it does the job on a back door. The fabric distorts over time and the magnets stop meeting properly. Expect a season or two.

The magnetic window net is a frame held on with velcro stuck to the window frame. No drilling, which makes it practical in a rented flat. Its weak point is the adhesive, which heat and coastal humidity eventually loosen. It rarely lets go all at once: it starts at one corner, and then the mesh catches the wind.

The aluminium net has a rigid frame, measured and cut for your opening, with the mesh tensioned inside it. This is what we build. It is also the only one of the three measured in years rather than months, and aluminium does not rust, which matters near the sea.

Mesh and mounting are two separate choices

Most guides run the two together, and that is the most common source of confusion. They are separate decisions.

The mounting is the mechanism: how the net opens and where it goes when it is not in use. Roll-up, accordion, sliding. It depends on the shape of the opening and how often you use it.

The mesh is the fabric tensioned inside the frame. It depends on what you want it to do with light, and with us it is the only thing that changes the price. The three meshes are set out on the made-to-measure page.

One constraint links the two: the blackout and double meshes exist only as an accordion. If you want to darken a bedroom, your mounting is already chosen.

Window, door or patio door

On a window, every system works, and the choice is mostly about looks. A roll-up disappears into its cassette when it is not in use.

On a door, you need a system that takes being handled several times a day. A living-room or terrace door is opened constantly, and cheap hardware fails quickly in those conditions. This is also where the double mesh earns its price: two layers in one frame take hands, children and wind far better.

On a wide patio door, width becomes the question. Beyond about 3 m², an accordion is built as two panels meeting in the middle. That adds 130 MAD, except on the double mesh, which is exempt because it is already built as a two-layer unit.

Roll-up, accordion or sliding

These are the three mounting systems you will find in Morocco.

The roll-up winds into a cassette on a spring roller. It is the most discreet on an ordinary window, and the easiest to forget about out of season.

The accordion folds to the side, pleated. It takes traffic best, so it is the one for doors. It is also the only one available in all three meshes.

The sliding net runs on a track, like the window itself. It is the natural choice on an opening that already slides, since it repeats the same movement.

With us, all three cost the same. What changes the price is the mesh.

What a mosquito net costs in Morocco

Price is per square metre and depends on the mesh.

Mesh Price For
Standard 550 MAD/m² Living rooms, kitchens
Blackout 650 MAD/m² Bedrooms, exposed facades
Double 750 MAD/m² Doors and wide openings

Width × height × the price of the mesh, with one square metre the minimum charged. A 1.20 m × 1.50 m window in the standard mesh comes to 990 MAD. Add 60 MAD delivery and 10 days to build.

Most prices you will find online are European figures converted across, which does not mean much here: labour, transport and the profile itself do not cost the same. A price quoted per unit, before anyone knows your dimensions, does not mean much either on made-to-measure work. The calculator gives you yours from two numbers.

How a mosquito net is fitted

The frame fixes to the window frame, never to the wall. Mark the fixing points dry, check it sits true before driving any screw, and confirm the mesh is tensioned on all four sides. A frame fitted out of square starts binding within weeks.

On a roll-up, the cassette goes at the top and the guide rail has to be truly vertical or the mesh rubs on every pull. On a door, the bottom track must be clean and level, or the panel forces every time someone walks through.

We deliver and fit ourselves. If you would rather fit it yourself, say so when ordering: the manufacturing dimensions differ depending on whether the frame sits on the face of the opening or inside the reveal. That is the most common mistake, and it cannot be undone after cutting.

Where to have one fitted in Morocco

Our workshop is in Hay Adrar, Agadir. We do the measuring, cutting, assembly and checking there. We deliver and fit across Morocco, from Souss-Massa to Marrakech, Casablanca and Tangier.

Wherever you order, ask three questions first: who fits it, how long it takes, and what the price includes. A net that arrives in a box leaves you the delicate part.

When to order

Demand for mosquito nets in Morocco varies a lot across the year. Between the trough and the peak, searches multiply by nearly eight, and the peak falls in the hot months.

So order before the season rather than during it. At the height of summer every workshop in the country has the same queue, and our 10 days holds up far better when it is not July.

Send us two numbers and a photo of the opening, and we will come back with the price.

Frequently asked

Which mosquito net should I choose?

Start from the opening, not the catalogue. An ordinary window: a roll-up, the most discreet. A living-room or terrace door: an accordion, which takes the traffic. An opening that already slides: a sliding net. Only then choose the mesh, based on what you want it to do with light.

How do you install a mosquito net?

The frame fixes to the window frame, never to the wall. Mark the fixing points dry, check it sits true before driving a screw, and confirm the mesh is tensioned on all four sides. On a roll-up the guide rail has to be truly vertical or the mesh rubs every time. We fit what we build.

Can you make a mosquito net yourself?

Yes, for a simple fixed frame: aluminium or PVC profile, corner brackets, mesh and a locking spline are all sold in hardware shops. The hard part is not the assembly but the mitre cuts and the mesh tension, which decide whether it ripples. A roll-up or accordion mechanism is adjusted during assembly and does not lend itself to DIY.

How much does a mosquito net cost in Morocco?

From 550 MAD per square metre for the standard mesh, 650 for blackout and 750 for double, with one square metre the minimum charged. A 1.20 m × 1.50 m window therefore comes to 990 MAD in the standard mesh. Add 60 MAD for delivery.

How do you fix a roll-up net that keeps catching?

Nine times out of ten the track is dirty. Run a dry cloth through it and then vacuum, with no oil or grease: lubricant holds sand and makes it worse. If it still catches, the roller spring has lost its tension and the mechanism needs re-tensioning in the workshop.

Which net works with roller shutters?

A roll-up net mounts under the shutter box, provided there is room for the cassette. When there is not, an accordion fitted inside the reveal almost always works. Send a photo of the opening with the shutter box visible and we will tell you which of the two fits.
